Many case writers across the world know about the oikos Global Case Writing Competition - a competition dedicated to develop excellence in case writing in the field of sustainability management, strategy and social entrepreneurship. This programme has developed a strong reputation, since it provides extensive feedback to case writers from world-class faculty within a double-blind review process, in addition to substantial prize money for winning cases (CHF 5,000).
In 2011 this
competition has been accompanied by a new initiative aiming at increasing the use of sustainability-related cases in the classroom. The core of the oikos Case Teaching Initiative is the new periodical oikos Case Quarterly: Teaching Cases in Action (launched in winter 2011). Each quarterly issue contains interviews and commentary from leading case writers and instructors, thus creating a forum for discussing case-based methods of teaching sustainability, management and entrepreneurship. Each issue also contains news on case teaching events held around the world by oikos and its partner organisations. The first issue of oikos Case Quarterly featured Prof. Kate Kearins (Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand) and her winning case Phoenix Organic: Valuing Sustainability While Desiring Growth.
Liudmila Nazarkina, oikos PhD Fellow and oikos Case Quarterly editor says: "At oikos, we have realised that promoting the development of high quality cases on sustainability and social entrepreneurship may not be sufficient to achieve our mission of influencing curricula of universities worldwide. The next step is to promote the use of these cases in the classroom. This is exactly the purpose of oikos Case Quarterly. We aim at attracting the attention of case instructors to new innovative cases on sustainability and social entrepreneurship. oikos Case Quarterly may be also of interest to academics who do not necessarily teach sustainability since many of oikos
winning cases can be taught in mainstream strategic management and
entrepreneurship classes."
