Criticisms
Despite BHP Billiton's sustainability initiatives, the
company attracted criticism on several fronts. Some critics argued that its
environmental initiatives were nothing but PR exercises. According to Prof.
Sharon Beder (Beder), BHP Billiton used PR strategies to protect its image
rather than improve its operational practices.
The company faced its greatest environmental criticism for its Ok Tedi mine in
PNG, which reportedly polluted the local rivers. In 2000, the World Bank had
asked BHP to close the mine. According to the report, "significant and
unacceptable environmental impact is occurring in the Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers
below the mine."...

Looking Ahead
According to the 2007 Sustainability Report of BHP Billiton,
the company would continue its sustainability initiatives. Charles Goodyear,
Chief Executive Officer, BHP Billiton, said, "We will further focus our
attention on eliminating fatal risks, further reducing the energy and greenhouse
intensity of our business, optimizing the use of water, and minimizing
occupational exposures."...
