The (No) Waste Land Contd...

The food and beverages outlets were required to sell their products with minimum packaging. Distribution of flyers or freebies was prohibited. Community campaigns against littering were initiated by Entsorgung & Recycling Zürich6.

This was not a one time attempt by the authorities in Zürich, but part of an ongoing effort to reduce and recycle waste in the city.

These efforts began in 1980s when the Social Democratic party7 in Zürich launched an ecological waste management system that focused on avoiding the creation of waste, reusing waste, and disposing of waste in an eco-friendly manner.

The system had the desired effect and it was successful in reducing waste. According to Alfred Borchard, Logistics Manager of Zürich's Waste and Recycling Bureau, “Household trash in Zürich has decreased overall by 40 percent since 1992.”8

Zürich's waste management program became popular throughout Switzerland and also in other European countries, because of its eco-friendly waste disposal methods.
