Oprah - Serving the People
Since Oprah had been a victim of child abuse, she constantly
raised the issue in her show and made constant efforts to protect children from
such abuse. In 1991, she demanded that the government pass a new law (The
National Child Protection Act) against child abuse.
Oprah even testified before
the Senate Judiciary Committee of the US to help them establish a database of
convicted child abusers in the US.
In December 1993, Oprah's efforts were
rewarded when the 'Oprah Bill' (The National Child Protection Act) was made a
law.
On principle, Oprah donated at least 10% of her annual earnings to charity
during her adult life... |

The Other Side of Oprah?
Not surprisingly, Oprah had many critics. Over
the years, many of her personal as well as business related policies
had been criticized. Though employees at Harpo agreed that the pay
and benefits offered by the company were exceptional compared to
industry standards, some criticized the strict rules and regulations
enforced. They said that Oprah forced her employees to sign a
lifelong confidentiality agreement, which bound them from making any
revelations about Harpo in their lifetime. In a lawsuit filed by a
former employee against the company, Harpo was described as a
'narcissistic workplace...

The Show Goes On
Much to the delight of her fans, Oprah changed her mind, and in mid-2002,
renewed her contract for the show till 2006. Media reports mentioned that
this was 'typical' of Oprah as she generally changed her decisions rather
easily. Though Oprah renewed the contract, she said that she was exploring
the options she had after exiting the show.
However, she was quick to add
that she would not leave TV. Analysts remarked that if Oprah did leave the
show in the future, her options were unlimited... |
