Along the way, he had also severed his connection with Jagmohan Dalmiya7 (Dalmiya), who was seen as his godfather, and acted in an emotional ad for Pepsi that projected him as a team man who was working hard to get back into the team that he had built.

The team's bad performance coupled with his good run in domestic cricket, paved the way for his comeback into the team. Ganguly made a successful return to the team.

Though there was a whiff of politics involved in his recall, his superlative performance in the matches he played since then put an end to any murmurings. His name was the first to be penned down when the selectors sat down to list the players who would represent Indian in the 2007 World Cup.8 Ganguly had proved his detractors wrong once again. He was the choice of the masses to lead India in the 2007 World Cup. But Ganguly clearly told the media that he was not interested in the position.

However, experts felt that even without the captain's tag, Ganguly would command considerable influence over the team members. As a player and a leader, Ganguly had nothing more to prove. However, the debacle of the team in the 2007 World Cup prompted some experts to say that the team would have benefited from his leadership in that premier sporting event.

The aftermath of the debacle was even more distressing for Indian cricket with the coach and senior members of the team blaming each other. The team was divided like never before. Some opined that the collateral damage to the team had indeed been huge...

Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972, in an affluent family of Kolkata (previously, Calcutta), in West Bengal,9 India. He was first selected to play for the Indian national cricket team during the 1991-92 tour of Australia. However, after the series he was dropped from the national squad. In 1996, Ganguly had made his first comeback to the Indian cricket team and he quickly rose to prominence in the international cricketing arena...
