Abstract
Agilent Technologies (Agilent) is a leading supplier of electronic test and measurement products, including data generators, multi-meters, and oscilloscopes. It was formed in 1999 with the spin-off from Hewlett- Packard's measurement business. Agilent faces many risks. Recovery in the telecom markets is not expected for some time. Agilent has also seen a drop in the recovery of the semiconductor and associated semiconductor capital equipment markets. Agilent's future depends significantly on the pace of recovery in these markets. Agilent has frozen hiring and reduced all discretionary spending. The company has also initiated short-term closures of plants to reduce production levels. Agilent believes that it has the cost structure as well as innovative products to compete effectively. As competition increases, it remains to be seen how Agilent will cope with uncertainty in the years to come. The case helps MBA students understand how a company can integrate risk management in strategic planning.
