Abstract

General Electric (GE), one of the largest companies in the world, has a presence in businesses ranging from jet engines to TV broadcasting, from plastics to power plants. The company produces aircraft engines, locomotives and other transportation equipment, appliances (kitchen and laundry equipment), lighting, electric distribution and control equipment, generators and turbines, nuclear reactors, medical imaging equipment, and plastics. GE's senior Indian executives are convinced that in a short period of time, India will occupy a central place in the GE global system. CEO Scott Bayman shares this optimism. Already, GE has created a huge back office set up in the country. GE is also looking at new opportunities in India. For instance, the emergence of low-cost airlines has created opportunities in areas such as the manufacturing of aircraft engines, maintenance services, and leasing or pure financing. The related airport-upgradation-and-construction boom presents opportunities in infrastructure, lighting and security. Similar opportunities exist in the passenger car market. The company's lighting arm believes it can sell headlight components to car or component-makers. Its plastics business also has similar plans. GE's commercial finance arm will finance the supply chain and the retail finance arm, the eventual purchase of a car by a customer. GE also believes India can be a major source of knowledge for the global system.
