Abstract

Moser Baer India (Moser Baer), incorporated in 1983, started producing digital storage media (floppy disks) in the year 1986 and went on to become the second largest optical storage media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) company in the world by 2007. The case discusses the factors responsible for the success of the company, namely, its ability to be proactive in the market while staying at the forefront of technology, which it achieved through its strong research and development capabilities. The case discusses the company's foray into the solar energy business through the creation of a subsidiary, Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd. (MBPV). It then discusses the acquisitions made by MBPV to augment its technology as well as manufacturing capabilities.
