Abstract

The case explores the role of Mira Murati, the technologist widely credited for developing ChatGPT, in the development of innovative and groundbreaking AI products, fostering ethical AI practices, and shaping the future of AI responsibly. She was the former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of US based AI research and deployment company OpenAI, The case highlights Murati’s significant contributions to OpenAI and how under Murati’s guidance, OpenAI had consistently been at the forefront of AI research and development. As the company’s head of technology, she oversaw the development of cutting-edge AI technologies, including ChatGPT and DALL-E 2. The case discusses Murati’s leadership style, her adeptness at navigating the complexities of emerging technologies, and her deep-rooted commitment to AI safety standards and ethical AI proliferation. After playing a pivotal role in OpenAI’s success, Murati quit the company in September 2024 to launch her own AI startup Thinking Machines Lab in February 2025.
