Case: Digital Transformation at Starbucks

In a Financial Times (FT) article titled "How real-world cases work as business school teaching tools", published on November 8, 2024, a case written by CRC has been quoted as one of the Top 10 Cases. Commenting on the case, "Digital Transformation at Starbucks", the author of the FT article says, "This case gives MBA students valuable insight into a company’s digital transformation and customer experience management as ways to remain competitive. It offers a lesson on how traditional businesses can reinvent themselves using technology while keeping their core brand value and identity. MBA students often complain about a lack of real-world challenges in the classroom. The digital transformation case study promotes critical thinking about leadership in the rapidly changing digital landscape."

“I have enjoyed using the Starbucks case in my classes, ranging from Bachelor's degree to Master's, MBA, and Executive Education. It is a sound, well-written case, including enough detail to be of practical use. Howard Schultz’s (CEO) personality is a source of inspiration and carries plenty of messages that go straight to the core of Digital Transformation. It is a great case.”

Case: Facebook-Cambridge Analytica Data Scandal
“I like teaching the case because it covers an important aspect that students can relate to. The first challenge with a case is to be relatable so that students put themselves into the position of the characters, in this instance the affected Facebook users, and it certainly succeeds in doing that. They can all relate strongly to the case as social media users and it triggers emotive and rational responses, at times in conflict, that makes for excellent classroom conversations. I think the case is successful because it presents the facts very well without the sensation that often obscures the facts when these events are covered in the media. Secondly, it has a very clear description of the different parties and how data was shared without drowning in technical detail, i.e. non-technical students have no problem at all to follow and digest the detail of the case.”

- Martin Butler, Professor of Management Practice in Digital Transformation, Vlerick Business School.
