#1 Bestselling Case Author for Fourth Consecutive Year

Just in! Case speaks to Dr. Debapratim Purkayastha, Dean- IBS Case Research Center, on his achievement, his association with case writing, the increasing popularity of cases across the world and why case writing is beyond just doing a job!

For Dr. Debapratim Purkayastha winning is a habit! He has retained the top position in The Case Centre’s Bestselling Authors List for the fourth consecutive year out of more than 8,000 case authors worldwide, by selling over 21,000 copies in 2018/19. The other bestselling authors are from internationally reputed B-schools like IMD, Harvard Business School, INSEAD, etc.

In 2018/19, Dr. Purkayastha’s cases were sold in over 370 organizations in 57 countries, in The Case Centre alone. We asked Dr. Purkayastha how it feels to be the numero uno in the elite club consistently over the years. “It’s a great honor to feature in this list!  I only try to write good cases, being in the list is only incidental but also highly satisfying at a personal level. Like me, my team members at IBS are working very hard to get high quality and relevant content for Management Education into classrooms worldwide. I am sure that, in the coming years, you will see more people from IBS breaking into this elite list by virtue of the excellent work that is happening in the institution,” said the best-selling author.

Dr. Purkayastha pointed out: “We already have people, such as Prof. GV Muralidhara, now the Director of IBS Bangalore, at #21. Mr. Vivek Gupta continues to feature in the list at #16 for the cases he wrote here, and in 2014 Mr. Sanjib Dutta had featured along with me in The Case Centre’s 40th anniversary bestselling authors list for the past four decades.”

Dr. Purkayastha started writing cases only in 2006 when he joined ICFAI. He was convinced about the benefits of using cases both in B-Schools as well as in corporate settings having experienced it first hand in both the settings. Commented Dr. Purkayastha, “I had also used cases myself in training executives and managers in the corporate setting before I started writing cases. I just love what a case allows you to do in a classroom – how it engages the participants and help them understand how theory is applied to solve real world problems.”  According to him, a well-researched and well-written case is a potent tool in the hands of a teacher well-versed in employing the case method.

Dr. Purkayastha has written hundreds of cases. Are there any personal favorites? “All the cases I have developed are very close to my heart, but a few of them does lose relevance over the time,” commented Dr. Purkayastha. He said that three of his recent favorites are   7WEAVES: Slow Fashion , Consumer Research at Procter & Gamble: From Field Research to Agile Research , and Economics of Apple, Inc.`s iPhone .

On the increasing popularity of cases in management education across the world, Dr. Purkayastha feels that the popularity will further increase as teachers try to get the fast and tremendous changes in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world into the classrooms to train participants, even before these developments get into the textbooks.
Dr. Purkayastha’s advice to budding cases writers is to never lose focus of why the case is being written in the first place. They should constantly ask themselves - what are the objectives? and how the case is going to help achieve these objectives? He further goes on to say it is important to research the case well and write in a style that readers can relate to. The prolific writer concludes the discussion by saying, “most importantly, remember that by writing this case you are not just doing your job, or doing this just to get credit. You are doing this to help other teachers to achieve certain objectives in their classroom. You are shaping the future of numerous students by helping them develop skills that will contribute towards making them industry ready.”
