INTRODUCTION

On March 6, 2015, Vodafone Group Plc, UK, announced its mandatory maternity policy. The telecom giant stated that the policy would be applicable globally to all its female employees working in the 30 countries in which it operated.

It stated that the policy would be effective from April 1, 2015. Vodafone proclaimed itself as a “pioneer” in embracing a policy on maternity benefits that was globally applicable. According to the company, the maternity policy included a minimum 16 weeks fully paid leave to its expectant mothers and a 30-hour week with full pay for the first six months after their return from maternity leave. According to Vodafone, the policy would be applicable to the employees of Vodafone, Vodacom , and Safaricom . It would not, however, apply to the employees of Vodafone group’s partner companies...
