Abstract

The case ‘Unfair Labor Practices at Amazon India Warehouses’ is about the alleged unjust labor practices prevailing at Amazon’s warehouses in India. There were complaints that Amazon’s working conditions, working hours, policies related to forming of labor unions, and wage structure were unfair. The case also covers the details of the struggle by the warehouse workers in its fulfillment centers for better wages and improvement in working conditions. The protests and strikes were led by labor unions such as UNI Global Union and Amazon India Workers Association. Based on the complaints of the labor unions, the labor department of the Government of India conducted inspections and found that Amazon was exploiting loopholes in the labor laws. Eventually, Amazon accepted that there were lapses in workplace safety standards at its warehouses.
