Abstract

This case examines the entry and growth of Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi into the highly competitive Chinese Electric Vehicle (EV) space and the strategic rationale, challenges, and potential outcomes of this diversification. Xiaomi announced its foray into the EV industry in 2021, diversifying beyond its core smartphone business in light of growing global demand for sustainable smart electric mobility and increasing adoption of EVs globally. On March 28, 2024, Xiaomi launched its first EV, the SU7, in China, the world’s largest and most competitive EV market. The SU7 sedan, sold more than 7,000 units in April 2024, making Xiaomi the eighth-largest EV startup in China Entering into the EV market presented both significant opportunities and tough challenges for Xiaomi. As a major player in consumer electronics, it had a large customer base, a strong brand presence, technological expertise, and commitment to affordability and adequate financial resources to emerge as a strong player in the EV industry. However, analysts felt that Xiaomi’s success in the EV sector would depend on its ability to navigate regulatory hurdles, overcome supply chain issues, and build a strong reputation as an auto maker.
