Abstract

This caselet talks about the eminent personality Dr. Manmohan Singh and his tremendous contribution to the Indian Economy. Manmohan Singh was born in Gah (now in Punjab, Pakistan). He completed his graduation from Chandigarh University, India, and had a doctorate in Economics from Oxford. During the 1970s and 1980s, he worked with the Reserve Bank of India, the Industrial Development Bank of India, and the Planning Commission of India. In 1991, as the Finance Minister of India, he helped the country to avoid possible bankruptcy and crisis situation. He was the main architect of the economic reforms in 1991. Known as a simple, down-to-earth, honest, and committed person, Manmohan Singh, during his 10-year tenure years as Prime Minister, worked on various agendas like the Indo-USA Nuclear Deal, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005, Right to Information Act, National Food Security Act 2013, Reforms in Foreign Direct Investment, and the Rural Health Mission. These helped make a huge difference to the development of the society and improved the economic status of the country. In 2014, he became the first Indian to receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers given by the Japanese government. The honor was presented to him by Japanese Emperor Akihito in 2014.
