Abstract

The case touches upon the unprecedented crisis caused by the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights across major airports by IndiGo, one of India’s largest airlines, in early December 2025. The cancellations disrupted air travel nationwide, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The crisis unfolded after the airline failed to fully comply with the revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Although the implementation deadline ended on November 1, 2025, IndiGo was underprepared for the transition. The case describes the reasons for the crisis, especially acute crew shortages that led to questions about the airline’s workforce planning and the risks of lean staffing strategies in a highly regulated and rapidly expanding industry. The episode raised pressing concerns about balancing ambitious fleet expansion with sustainable human resource planning. It underscores the strategic imperative for robust manpower forecasting, proactive compliance, and a long-term talent strategy to support growth without compromising safety or service reliability.
