Introduction
Sweden-based furniture retail giant IKEA Systems BV (IKEA), had a long history of addressing environmental and social issues at the root level. Over the years, the company developed some internal procedures to enable this, including the Natural Step (TNS) Framework (the basic structure for its environmental policy), the IKEA Sustainability Product Scorecard (to evaluate the sustainability impact of its products), and IWAY (a code of conduct to deal with social responsibility among suppliers).
During the early 2000s, when the issue of sustainability of cotton shot into prominence, IKEA knew little about cotton cultivation and its manufacturing process.
