The National Urban Transport Policy: Reinventing Urban Transport?* |
|
|
Population growth, rapid urbanization, and industrial activity in India have led to various problems in the urban settlements. The urban infrastructure is not able to cope with the rapid pace of urbanization. Urban productivity is very dependent on the efficiency of its transport system. But almost all large Indian cities face transport problems. To tackle this issue the National Urban Transport Policy was introduced in April 2006. The policy discusses in detail various transport issues like integrating land use and transport planning, priority to the use of public transport, quality and pricing of public transport, technologies for public transport, integrated public transport systems, parking etc and suggests strategies to handle these issues. The policy though has its flaws. It falls short on enforcement and implementation, and handling issues like co-coordinating various agencies involved in transport, Intermediate Public Transport etc.
