Abstract

This case explores the implementation of Agentic AI within the banking and fintech industry, focusing on leading global bank Citigroup Inc.’s (Citigroup) evolving proprietary AI application – Citi Stylus Workspaces. Piloted with agentic AI capabilities, it was to act as a virtual assistant, which would allow employees to offload routine tasks to it. The initiative launched under the leadership of Jane Fraser (Fraser) was to enhance the operational efficiency at Citigroup by increasing output efficiency, discharge routine administrative and compliance tasks to Agentic AI tools, so that the advisors and bankers focus on the more “human” aspects of the job. The other proprietary AI applications at Citigroup included Citi Assist, Agent Asist, Ask Wealth and Advisor Insights were also helping employees into automating mundane tasks like segregating, bills, tax compliance, compiling lists that ordinarily take up time to the AI agent. Some analysts argue that Agentic AI was primarily used to optimize repetitive, time-consuming tasks; however, the resulting efficiencies often come with a host of challenges. Some of the challenges Fraser might face are: data availability, regulatory compliance, data privacy and security issues, ethical uncertainty, low workforce readiness, huge investments in technology, talent retention, and use of AI responsibly and the fear of losing the human touch with customers.
