Abstract

The case discusses the data privacy issues Meta Platforms, Inc.'s (Meta), a global technology company, faced for violating federal and state privacy laws, and engaging in misleading advertising and the consumer trust it lost owing to the data collection and usage practices for its Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses. Launched in 2020 in collaboration with Ray-Ban under EssilorLuxottica, Meta's Ray-Ban AI Smart Glasses had come under public scrutiny after data privacy issues cropped up since 2023 onwards.. As the issues surfaced and came to the public eye, a lawsuit was filed in March 2026 in California, US, alleging that the company’s claim “designed for privacy, controlled by you” was misleading. A formal inquiry followed in the UK as well seeking clarification from Meta on its data privacy issues. Reportedly, highly sensitive and intimate content, such as individuals in private settings, financial details, and other personal activities, were disclosed and reviewed by some contractors in Kenya, raising concerns about user awareness and consent. The case study raises important questions about privacy concerns, informed consent, deceptive marketing practices, and potential violations of data protection laws in connection with AI smart glasses. Although Meta had refined its data handling and review policy in response to growing scrutiny, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Zuckerberg) faced a strategic question: What should he do to continue to advance innovations at Meta while at the same time prioritizing stronger data privacy policies to win back user trust?
