Abstract

This case is about the digital transformation initiatives taken by L’Oréal, a leading global beauty products company. The initiatives, undertaken in marketing, product development, and e-commerce, included those encompassing AI such as the AI content lab ‘CreAItech’ and the personalized beauty platform ‘noliAI’. The transformation happened simultaneously across L’Oréal’s global operations and digital platforms. The case initially discusses the need for the digital transformation initiatives, L’Oreal’s strategic AI vision, and the various partnerships the company entered into for its GenAI implementation. ‘CreAItech’ was the generative AI content platform used by L’Oréal to augment the creativity of its marketing and content teams. Similarly, ‘noliAI’ was utilized to understand the customers’ needs and desires and suggest the appropriate beauty product for them. The case then touches upon how L’Oréal was also utilizing innovative tools in its sustainability initiatives related to marketing and product development. The company used an innovative tool called ‘SPOT’ (Sustainable Product Optimization Tool) to help it in evaluating the environmental aspect and enhancing the social performance of its products. In the future, the company intended to further develop data, GenAI, and digital platforms to provide hyper-personalized beauty experiences to its customers. L’Oréal also aimed to reach its sustainability commitments by 2030 to achieve digital transformation in a sustainable and environment friendly manner. One of the product emission goals was a 50% reduction per finished product of all greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) compared to 2016 baselines.
