About Carrefour
In 1959, two entrepreneurs, Marcel Fournier (Fournier) and Louis Defforey (Defforey) from Annecy in eastern France, decided to establish a large discount supermarket. Fournier decided to name the venture Carrefour (Crossroads), as the store was located at the intersection of five roads in Annecy. The merchandise at Carrefour was priced lower than the prices prevailing in the market. Soon, the store became very popular among customers. Defforey studied the retail practices in the US and after observing the huge stores and the discounts, and services offered in the US, he decided to adopt similar practices in France.
