| ByteDance was founded in March 2012 by tech entrepreneur Zhang Yiming (Zhang) after he saw an opportunity to combine the power of AI with the rise of the mobile internet in China and transform the way people consumed and received information. Zhang, then 29 years old, was a serial entrepreneur who had founded several ventures prior to ByteDance including Kuxun — then the dominant travel and transportation search engine in China – and a real estate search portal, Jiujiufang.
