In 1935, Hubert Hansen – assisted by his three sons – began a business called ‘Hansen’s Fruit and Vegetable Juices’ in Los Angeles, California, that sold fresh non-pasteurized juices. The business, whose main clients were Hollywood film studios, proved to be a success and was later renamed as Hansen’s Juices, Inc.
By the 1940s, the business was again renamed as ‘The Fresh Juice Company of California, Inc.’ (FJI). The company’s product line sold under the ‘Hansen’ brand included fresh fruit juices of orange, carrot, apple, strawberry, and banana, apart from various blends. The company’s products were not only sold throughout the US, but were also shipped overseas.
In 1977, one of Hubert’s grandsons, Tim Hansen (Tim), formed Hansen Foods, Inc. (HFI) to capitalize on the perceived demand for shelf stable pasteurized natural juices and juice blends. Tim obtained a license from FJI that enabled him to sell HFI’s products under the ‘Hansen’ brand. HFI’s products had no preservatives, caffeine, sodium, artificial flavors, or colors. In 1978, HFI added sodas made from natural ingredients to its product line.
