About Microsoft Africa
Microsoft forayed into Africa in 1992 by launching its first subsidiary in South Africa to accelerate economic and social development in the continent. The software giant in collaboration with several industry experts in South Africa transformed software, hardware, and technology into tools that helped individuals, local businesses, and communities.
Over the years, Microsoft partnered with more than 5,000 organizations locally in South Africa in a bid to improve the company's business efficiency and attain competitive advantage. In 1997, Bill Gates (Gates), Founder of Microsoft, opened a Digital Village – a computer center in Soweto, South Africa, for providing the poor residents free access to the Internet. Microsoft, in association with Africare, an US development organization, and local computer hardware companies of Soweto invested US$ 100,000 to set up the Digital Village. Commenting on the initiative, Gates said, "Soweto is a milestone. There are major decisions ahead about whether technology will leave the developing world behind. This is to close the gap.".....
