The Indian textile industry was the oldest and largest segment of the Indian economy. It employed around 100 million people directly and indirectly (40 million directly and 60 million indirectly) and was one of the largest contributors to Indian exports, constituting around 11% of total exports (as estimated during the fiscal year 2015-16) .
