The origins of United can be traced to the mid-1920s. The Air Mail Act 1925 opened the US aviation sector up to private players. The US government invited bids for the operation of an airmail service, which was then under the US Post Office Department. Walter T Varney, a businessman, won the contract and created Varney Airlines (VA). The airline was officially launched on April 6, 1926, and the airmail service began in the area between Pasco, Washington, and Elko, Nevada.
