BA was set up in 1974 after the establishment of a British Airways Board by the British Government to manage two of the UK’s nationalized airline corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC, formed in 1939) and British European Airways (BEA, formed in 1946) , and two provincial airlines Cambrian Airways from Cardiff and Northeast Airlines from Newcastle. On March 31, 1974, all four companies were merged to form “British Airways”.
After remaining a state company (Government owned) for 13 years, BA was privatized in February 1987 as part of a wider privatization plan by the Conservative Government led by BA’s then Chairman, Sir John King, and CEO, Colin Marshall. BA was headquartered at Harmondsworth, London, near Heathrow Airport.
