INTRODUCTION |
|
On On February 16, 2016, a federal magistrate ordered Apple Inc. (Apple) to help the FBI unlock the Apple iPhone used by one of the terrorists in the 2015 San Bernardino attack, the biggest terrorist attack on American soil after 9/11. Fourteen people were killed and twenty two were seriously injured when a couple (Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik) opened fire at a departmental event attended by Farook’s colleagues. The authorities could not gain access to Farook’s iPhone due to the sophisticated encryption used by Apple to protect the privacy of its customers. When Apple refused to decrypt the phone, America’s Justice Department requested a California magistrate to issue an order to the company to comply with the request of the federal government. Upon receiving the order, Apple’s CEO wrote a long letter to the company’s customers warning of serious breach of their privacy if Apple was forced to comply.
