Kalra studied at some of the best academic institutions in India. He held a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and an MBA from India’s leading management institute, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) , Ahmedabad.
Kalra’s first job was at ABN Amro Bank N.V. in the early 1990s, where he worked for three years. Later, dissatisfaction caused him to quit the job and he joined an American company called AMF Bowling Inc. (AMF), which was the world’s largest bowling company. Kalra had to set up bowling alleys and billiard halls for the first time in India. With his boss in the US, Kalra believed that the job at AMF provided him the chance to be an entrepreneur setting up a venture. Kalra went on to set up almost 200 bowling lanes, most of them in small centers. However, the venture failed to take off, due to heavy competition and lack of adequate returns. The returns were so low that they failed to cover even the real estate costs.
