The history of Philip Morris could be traced back to the mid 18th century, when Mr Philip Morris (Morris) opened a shop on London’s Bond Street, selling tobacco and ready-made cigarettes in 1847. In 1854, Morris made the first cigarettes that were known as ‘Philip Morris English Ovals,’ a non-filter brand of oval-shaped cigarettes that the company manufactured in limited quantities. After Morris’s death in 1873, the business was taken over by his wife Margaret and his brother Leopold Morris (Leopold).
In 1881, the company went public. Leopold entered into a partnership with Joseph Grunebaum to establish Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum, Ltd. However, this partnership was dissolved in 1885, and the company became known as Philip Morris & Co., Ltd.
