The Need for 'WASH' Facilities
The lack of accessibility to WASH facilities had resulted in vast sections of the population suffering from deteriorating health conditions, reducing work efficiency, increasing health care costs, and slowing down economic progress. This, in turn, had led to global economic losses of up to $260 billion annually . Every year, thousands of people in the developing countries lost their lives due to sub-standard WASH facilities. The impact of inadequate WASH facilities was the worst on women and girl children.
It was estimated that women and girls across the world spent an average of 140 million hours daily in traveling long distances to collect water. This left them with very little time to improve their families’ lives and health . It was also observed that due to the lack of WASH facilities in schools, many girls had stopped going to school. As per UNICEF estimates, during the period 2005 to 2016, around 121 million children had dropped out of school, most of them girls . The lack of accessibility to WASH facilities also had a significant impact on the health conditions of the children, preventing them from attending school regularly and thus affecting their performance...
