Gravita India Limited
GIL was founded in the year 1992 by Dr. M. P. Agarwal, a doctor by profession with a passion for business. He, along with his son Rajat Agarwal, started Weldtech PrivateLimited, a welding surface coating company, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, in 1992. Weldtech was appointed as stockist of the Eutectic Division of Larsen and Toubro Limited for the state of Rajasthan. The company then ventured into the manufacture of lead products from battery scrap and set up a manufacturing unit at Jaipur in 1994. The plant with a capacity of 600 MT of re-melted lead, manufactured lead products from battery scrap. The next year, Weldtech established an environment friendly recycling operation of battery scrap to produce remelted lead and poly propylene chips..
Business Segmentation
GIL’s manufacturing facilities spanned India, Sri Lanka, and Africa. It primarily manufactured recycled lead batteries, plastic granules, and aluminum alloys. GIL ensured a meticulous process in refining and transforming lead, plastic, and aluminum scrap into an array of superior products. Its persistence in innovation and sustainability led to the emergence of state-of-the-art refining and manufacturing facilities strategically located, which had a minimal effect on the environment..
The Sustainability Perspective
The increasing population density and growing industrial activities resulted in the generation of large amounts of metallic and non-metallic waste. Some wastes were hazardous, requiring waste management services and recycling of the waste. In 2022-23, it was observed that the waste management segment had significant scope in India, as only 30% of the 75% of recyclable waste was recycled, thus providing tremendous opportunities in the recycling industry. The BWM Rules, 2022, implemented by the Government of India, paved the way for the systematic disposal of batteries. Unlike the earlier process of incineration and disposal in landfills, the new rules specified the systematic collection, recycling, or refurbishment of battery waste..
Road Ahead
The recycling industry was a volume-driven segment and profitability could be attained only with higher volumes of sales. To ensure higher volumes of sales, the management of GIL had followed innovative management practices that ensured confidence and trust among the customers. The management had been in continuous touch with the customers and apprised them of various opportunities in recycled products and the way in which the application and usage of recycled products could fulfill their needs and requirements in fulfilling their sustainability objectives. Hence, to be in close proximity with the customers, Gravita focused on geographical diversification, targeting markets similar to those existing in India, but also driven by the market demand for various recycled products..
