Trent, a portmanteau of Tata Retail Enterprise, was created by the Tata Group in 1998 after the Group sold off its 50% stake in Lakmé Cosmetics (Lakmé) to Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) for Rs.2 billion (US$48.46 million). After Trent was founded, Simone Tata, the then Chairperson of Lakmé, acquired Littlewoods, a UK-based fashion retail store that was operating in Bengaluru back then, and rebranded it as ‘Westside’ under Trent.
