Abstract:
In the past two decades, New Zealand had attracted a lot of attention from
economists all over the world. Earlier, it was one of the most protected
economies in the world. But in the 1980s and 1990s, the country embarked on an
ambitious economic liberalisation programme.
Some analysts felt that reforms had been implemented too fast and the associated
social costs had been high. Others opined that New Zealand would have been far
worse off without these reforms. The case illustrates the challenges developed
countries face in retaining their global competitiveness.
