Background Note
The first westerners arrived in Australia with Britain's Captain James Cook in 1770. Shortly thereafter, the British established a penal colony at Port Jackson (now Sydney). Most of the early settlers were convicts and their keepers. Even in modern days, Australia's first families liked to claim their descent from criminals- the worse the offence, the better the pedigree!
The Economy
For about seven decades after becoming a nation in 1901, Australia's economic policies had been quite successful. The country achieved one of the highest living standards in the world. Australia became one of the earliest welfare states, with free health care for all and generous pensions and welfare...
Industry
With its heavy reliance on agriculture and mining, Australia had all the appearance of a resource based old economy. In 2000-01, manufacturing accounted for only about 11.5% of GDP . Australia was wealthy in mineral and natural resources including oil & gas, iron ore, gold and other minerals...
International Trade
Japan and South-east Asia were Australia's most important trading partners, although substantial links with Europe and the US remained. Agriculture, mining and tourism were the most significant export-earning sectors...
Society
For such a large country, Australia's population was only 19 million. The country had used immigration to meet its labour requirements. Indeed, Australia, was probably more receptive to immigration than any other country. In the year to June 2005, Australia expected to admit around 120,000 immigrants, as well as almost 14,000 refugees. As a share of population (just over 20m), that was much higher compared to USA (which took in around a million a year but had a population 15 times greater). The intake of immigrants had been slowly increasing during the Howard years. In 2005-06, the total was set to rise by 20,000 because of Australia's labour shortage...
Future Outlook
Australia's settlers had overcome the challenge of living on the driest inhabited continent. Subsequent generations had turned around a failing economy and made it one of the world's most dynamic and resilient. The Australians had coped successfully with radical demographic and ethnic changes. They could relate both to the West and to Asia. They had created a tolerant yet orderly society, and had combined team spirit with rugged individualism...
