Introduction
In July 2021, US-based global tech giant Google Inc released its 2021 Diversity Report that revealed a spiking attrition among Black and Native American women and Latino men. Reportedly, these two groups left Google at higher rates than any other. The attrition figure for Black women rose from 110 in 2020 to 146 in 2021 on an attrition index that used 100 as a baseline. Among Native American women, the attrition index was 148 in 2021 compared to 123 in 2020 (See Exhibit I). While Black women made up less than 2% of Google’s workforce in 2021, Native American women made up just 0.3%. Latino men also saw a high attrition rate of 117, up from 98 in 2020. Since 2020, Google had had a particularly difficult time retaining women of color and the company’s US workforce continued to be majority white and male. Despite some gains in the number of Black employees in 2021, the company was far behind in its goal to double the number of Black workers by 2025. According to Melonie Parker (Parker), chief diversity officer at Google, “We recognize the platform that we have and the brand position that we have and we know that there are other companies that are watching us and looking at us. And we want to make sure that we don’t just show our successes, but that we show the areas that we need to get better as well.”..
