On May 22, 2018, Oscar Health Insurance (Oscar), a New York-based health insurance start-up, found a place among CNBC’s top 50 disruptors of 2018. Oscar was ranked twelfth on the list (See Exhibit I for 2018 CNBC Disruptor 50 Companies). The start-up differentiated itself as a consumer-focused health insurance company that was driven by data and technology. It aimed to address the problems that consumers faced with the existing health insurance companies by building a direct relationship with customers using technology.
