On July 8, 2019, British Airways Plc. (BA), the largest international carrier of the UK, was fined US$ 230 million by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the regulatory arm of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), UK, for a grave passenger data breach. The data breach happened between August 21, 2018, and September 5, 2018, due to a malicious cyber-attack on the BA website. Alex Cruz (Cruz), CEO of BA, called the attack, “Malicious and sophisticated, and it's the first time the airline's website had been hacked since its launch more than two decades ago.” The data breach was massive in terms of its intensity and intrusion on the privacy of its passengers.
