Introduction
On September 2021, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India, stated, “ONDC is a globally first-of-its-kind initiative that aims to democratize digital commerce, moving it from a platform-centric model to an open network. It will enable buyers and sellers to be digitally visible and transact through an open network. No matter what platform or application they use.” The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) was initiated by the DPIIT in mid-2021 and was designed to help curb digital monopolies and standardize the on-boarding of retailers on e-commerce sites. The ONDC was expected to be implemented on the lines of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the roll-out could help standardize the operational aspects of various e-commerce platforms that included onboarding of sellers, vendor discovery, price discovery, product cataloguing, etc..
