Introduction

Denmark-based The LEGO Group (LEGO), a family-owned company well known for the eponymous LEGO blocks, found itself in troubled waters in the 1990s. The toy market was changing rapidly and LEGO was facing growing competition from video games, automated toys, and the internet. New games were frequently being introduced in the market.

LEGO blocks – reusable interlocking plastic blocks that could be assembled to construct different objects – were equally popular among children and adults and enjoyed immense success in the 1970s and 1980s. But with the growing competition, the company found the going tough in the 1990s. It realized that its employees would have to be innovative to adapt to the fast changing world. Also, the company needed to adopt a dynamic culture to achieve its core values, “imagination, creativity, fun, learning, caring, and quality.”
