IBM was founded by Charles Ranlett Flint (Flint) in June 1911 in the US. The company was first known as CTR (Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company). IBM was the result of a merger of three manufacturing businesses – Tabulating Machine Company, Computing Scale Company, and International Time Recording Company. By 1914, when it managing the consolidated diverse corporation became difficult, Flint selected Thomas Watson Sr. (Watson) as General Manager. Watson soon implemented a number of productivity initiatives while also focusing on employee well-being.
