In October 2022, India-based plastic recycling start-up Banyan Sustainable Waste Management Pvt. Ltd. (Banyan or Banyan Nation) bagged the Social Enterprise award, 2022, at The Economic Times Start-up Awards . Mani Kishore Vajipeyajula (Vajipey), Banyan Co-founder, said, “Our goal is to achieve scale and profitability while staying true to our core mission of solving the menace of plastic pollution and creating lasting environmental and social impact.”
Founded in 2013, Banyan was a social and innovative start-up that used advanced technology to integrate waste management and recycling. It was one of India’s first vertically integrated plastic recycling companies. It used its proprietary technology platform to integrate thousands of informal plastic waste collectors into its supply chain, after which it processed the collected plastic waste at its processing facility in Hyderabad, India, to produce premium-quality recycled plastic called Better Plastic, which could be used in different products..
