The Genesis

On January 1, 1986, The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority came into existence. The primary objective behind founding the Authority was the disposal of waste gathered by its nine constituent Waste Collection Authorities (WCAs), which in turn were provided with twenty HWRCs. The bottomline agenda of the Authority was to attain a 100% state of utility out of the daily household waste and bring down the landfill diversion of the waste to zero.

The authority's waste reduction initiative was driven by four key objectives:
