Introduction

Twelve persons were killed and several hundreds fell ill in the early hours of May 7, 2020, when toxic styrene gas leaked out of the LG Polymers India Pvt Ltd’s (LGPI) Vishakapatnam (Vizag) plant located on the outskirts of the coastal city of Vizag in the southern Indian city of Andhra Pradesh (AP). The plant was owned by LG Chem Ltd. (LG Chem), South Korea. The gas leak triggered panic and chaos among the citizens of Vizag. People living within a 5 km radius of the plant suffered several ill effects, raising fears of a serious industrial disaster.
