Introduction
In February 2014, US-based software giant, Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) announced that five start-ups in Africa would receive funding as part of its 4Afrika initiative. In addition to the funding, Microsoft would also offer technical support and mentorship. The Center of Expertise, a group of Microsoft technology enthusiasts, who used Microsoft's tools and technologies to solve business problems, would closely work with the five start-ups to develop solutions and better their products. Commenting on the initiative, Amrote Abdella (Abdella), director of start-up engagement and partnership for 4Afrika, said, "Some of the barriers facing developers in Africa include finding the right technical support, sometimes it's the lack of understanding of the market demand. At times, it's simply the financial support to help get these start-ups to bootstrap their operations."
Microsoft's 4Afrika initiative was launched in February 2013 as a US$ 75 million project with the stated aim of engaging in Africa's economic development in a bid to improve its global competitiveness. Through the 4Afrika initiative, Microsoft aimed to increase Internet accessibility through affordable smart devices, promote new Africentric technologies, and educate the next generation of African web developers.
