Background Note
The origins of RadioShack can be traced back to the Hinckley-Tandy Leather Company (Hinckley-Tandy). The company was established in 1919 by two friends Dave Tandy (Dave) and Norton Hinckley (Hinckley) in Texas, US. It provided leather shoe parts and supplies to repair shops. In 1935, the shares of Hinckley-Tandy were listed for trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) .
In 1947, the son of Dave, Charles Tandy (Charles), joined the company. Charles steered the company's focus to the leather craft business with high gross-profit margins and the leisure-time hobby market with excellent growth possibilities. Hinckley did not see eye to eye with Charles and the difference of opinion between the two lead to a split in the company. While Hinckley got the shoe business, Dave and Charles formed Tandy Leather Company. In 1959, Tandy Leather Company was renamed as Tandy Corporation (Tandy) and its shares began to be traded on the NYSE under the ticker 'TAN'.
The first RadioShack store was started in 1921 by two brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann in Boston, US. The store primarily sold ship radio equipment and 'ham' radios . The brothers named the company after the small wooden structure on board ships that carried the radio equipment, which was referred to as the 'Radio Shack'. RadioShack had to its credit the first audio showroom in the US that provided comparisons of speakers, amplifiers, turntables, and phonograph cartridges.....
