Sustainable Sourcing at Unilever
One of the key elements in Unilever's sustainable sourcing plan was the Unilever Sustainable Agriculture Code (SAC) introduced in 2010. The SAC was crucial in giving the corporation a clear picture of how swiftly it was moving in the direction of its sustainability goals for agricultural sourcing. Giulia Stellari, Sustainability Sourcing Director, Unilever, said, “The goal of creating our Sustainable Agricultural Code was to set a bar that needs to be cleared in order for a product to enter the Unilever supply chain.” Through the SAC, Unilever persisted in pushing farmers and suppliers to adopt sustainable farming methods. All agricultural raw material suppliers were expected to be committed to the sustainability journey, show that they agreed to the performance requirements, and constantly improve performance over time..
Road Ahead
Even though it fell short of the goal of procuring all agricultural raw materials sustainably, Unilever vowed to continue striving for 100% sustainable sourcing after 2020. Through programs based on the Regenerative Agriculture Principles, the company sought to equip a new generation of farmers and smallholders throughout the supply chain to protect and restore nature. Through these principles, the company aimed to deliver positive outcomes in terms of nourishing the soil, increasing farm biodiversity, improving water quality, and improving livelihoods..
