Introduction
On May 21, 2021, the Constitutional court of Guyana, a country located in the north-eastern corner of South America, heard the first constitutional climate case in the Caribbean challenging fossil fuel production on the grounds that it exacerbated global warming and threatened human rights. The case claimed that the Guyanese government’s approval of a huge, ExxonMobil-led oil and gas build-on the country’s coast violated the government’s legal duty to protect its citizens’ rights to a healthy environment, sustainable development, and the rights of future generations.
