Kerala's Robust Healthcare System
The state of Kerala was formed on November 1, 1956. Blessed with greenery, evergreen forests, beaches, backwaters, and hill stations, the state also had the highest literacy levels and the lowest infant mortality rate in the entire country. Kerala had an efficient healthcare system which encompassed all sections of society in all the locations, rural and urban. Even before the formation of the state, Kerala had a strong history of a public healthcare system with the princely states of Travancore, Malabar, and Cochin providing healthcare to the poor and needy with free medicines and treatment...
Preparing for the Worst
With the declaration of the third case of Covid-19 on February 3, 2020, the GoK declared the outbreak a state disaster and the Disaster Management Act came into force. A State Response Team (SRT) was immediately formed. The team included senior officials from the various departments of Infectious diseases, Pediatrics, Epidemiology, Community medicine, Food safety, and Drug control. A state control room was established which was coordinated by the floor managers and worked in shifts round the clock. Looking Ahead
The lockdown which was scheduled to have been withdrawn on April 14, 2020, was extended till May 3, 2020, by the Government of India (GoI).
